Grading and Assessments

This year, grades in band will be primarily performance-based. Students will be assessed on:
  1. Performances: Participation and performance quality in scheduled events.
  2. In-Class Playing Quizzes: Regular quizzes will be conducted to monitor progress and reinforce learning.
  3. New Music and Theory: Students will learn new pieces and engage in music theory studies.

We will be playing out of the Standard of Excellence beginner books for music theory and using various worksheets to sharpen skills. Your student’s development as a musician is our top priority, and we encourage consistent practice at home. Practice time will be logged and graded, as this is an essential part of our learning process.

You can purchase the Standard of Excellence beginner books from Amazon. Please order book 1 of the instrument that your band member is playing for this academic year.

Practice Expectations

We only have about 7 hours a week to work with your beginning band student during school hours, so home practice is critical to their success. To supplement our in-school practice time, after-school practice sessions will be held on Wednesdays and Fridays from 3:00 PM to 5:30 PM. Practice logs will be used to monitor progress and will contribute to your child’s grade. Everything we do this fall is in preparation for the exciting events in the spring. Your support in ensuring consistent practice at home is invaluable.

Upcoming Performances and Events

We have several exciting events planned for this year:
  • Langston University Homecoming Parade: October 19th
  • Christmas Concert: Date to be announced
  • End-of-Year Floor Show Battle of the Bands: Details to come
In the spring, we are preparing for several key events, including the Viewers Choice Battle of the Bands in Atlanta in April. On our way back from Atlanta, we will stop in Memphis for a special history lesson and battle performance. Additionally, we will participate in the Genesis Band Competition and several other events to showcase our students' hard work and talent.

Fundraising Efforts

To fund our trips and activities, we will be conducting several fundraisers throughout the year.

Band Donations

For direct band donations, we accept Cash, Check, or  Cashapp ( $YacaWarriorBand ). Please include the band member you are donating on behalf of and your email address in the note field for confirmation of receipt. We will send your receipt with a thank you note for all monetary donations.
